Resumen

SALDANHA, José Luís. From São Paulo de Luanda to São Paulo de Macau: Foundation and consolidation of two Portuguese cities in the Portuguese overseas territories. CIDADES [online]. 2018, n.36, pp.1-18. ISSN 2182-3030.  https://doi.org/10.15847/citiescommunitiesterritories.jun2018.036.art01.

This paper draws from research work specifically aimed at historically contextualizing the cities of Luanda and Macau, inside the broader frame of a multidisciplinary, FCT-funded, Research Project named “Habitações para o maior número: Lisboa, Luanda, Macau”, refª PTDC/ATP-AQI/3707/2012. Autonomous scientific matter was produced, nonetheless, from which this article yields. The a anteriori reconnaissance of the historical, political and territorial circumstances of both towns where Portuguese settled in the late 16th Century, may be useful and pertinent for the - individual or crossed - penetration of those two contemporary metropoli, particularly regarding the radical set of changes they underwent across the last century. Special attention was paid to the most important Religious, Military and Civil edifices in each settlement - which we have pinpointed on mapping bases from the first quarter of the 17th Century and the final quarter in the 19th Century - owing to the importance they held in the those towns' everyday life and governance.

Palabras clave : Luanda; Macau; Military Architecture; Urban Morphology; Portuguese Colonial Empire.
