This article aims to rescue the process of constituting a peripheral community in southern Brazil. For theorizing, it is assumed that the city - especially those in countries located in areas on the periphery of hegemonic capitalism - is marked by the territorial exclusion of significant portions of its population for economic reasons, which result, among others, in social and cultural exclusions, difficult access to health, education, leisure and tourism. Empirical data were collected in the Cooperativa Habitacional Marianinha de Queiroz, located in the city of Caxias do Sul-RS (Brazil). For empirical research Participatory Research is used as an investigative strategy, because it proposes the exercise of active listening, reciprocity and mutual reflexivity. As complementary techniques for data collection, documentary, profile and focus group research are used, focusing on the history of the community in its struggle for the achievement of decent housing. The results, in addition to the historical rescue, show the importance of housing cooperatives for land regularization and the achievement of decent housing.
