Abstract

LOPES, Ana Carolina Louback. Cinema and the city interacting: Crossing paths between the film exhibition and the transformation of the ways of life in São Paulo. CIDADES [online]. 2020, n.41, pp.281-292. ISSN 2182-3030.  https://doi.org/10.15847/cct.21202.

This article aims to explore the relationships between the film exhibition activity and the transformation of the urban ways of life in São Paulo. Under a historiographical approach, different contexts of interaction between movie consumption and urban habits are outlined, drawing a chronological path that has as its destination and purpose, the debate about the virtualization of ways of life in contemporary cities, which was particularly accentuated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on this context, the text is organized into three moments. The first one explores the role of the movie theaters in modeling the modern São Paulo city, in a process that leads to the rise of both the film exhibition activity and the urbanity conditions. The second moment contemplates the reconfiguration of the movie theaters circuit, which changes itself from a city definer to be defined by it, both guided by a tendency of urban life privatization. Finally, the third moment, still in progress, refers to the digital environment consolidation and the new perspectives that derives from it, for both cinema and the city. Considering the inevitable impacts in face of the virtualization of urban life, fundamental issues must intrigue the contemporary urban studies, among which one should be specially highlighted: the relationship between current cinematographic consumption and the emptying of public spaces in the big cities.

Keywords : movie theatres; urban ways of life; public space; cultural habits.
