Between 2010 and 2015, the Portuguese migratory context changed significantly as a result of the social impacts of the financial and economic crisis, which resulted in a negative migratory balance, combining a reduction in the inflow and exit of immigrants (to new destinations or returning to the countries of origin) and an increase in Portuguese emigration. In this context, some Portuguese-Brazilian couples moved to Brazil, where economic and social opportunities seemed then more favourable; however, between 2016 and 2019, this flow oscillated again, now favouring Portugal as destination space. Combining quantitative data on marriages and births to demonstrate family connections between Brazilians and Portuguese men and women and qualitative data collected in interviews with Luso-Brazilian families who came to Portugal, this manuscript sought to scrutinize two main ideas: (i) the reasons for the return to Portugal and the relevance of family contexts, in this process; and (II) the future migratory projects and their implications in the (im)permanence in this European country. Theoretically this article challenges and discusses classical categories of migration studies as emigrants-immigrants and particularly departure and return, in binational contexts. The aim is thus to challenge the classical notion of return from a perspective focused in complex migrant subjects (mixed couples) in relation to the original spaces of reference which, in turn, are also transformed within the framework of migratory circularity.
