The ideophones of the Changana language in Mozambique and the principle of marking This work aims to describe the ideophones of the Changana language, taking into account the markedness’s principle pointing to three characteristics presented by Givón (2001 and 1995): 1) Meta-iconic principle of markedness that postulates that structurally more marked categories tend to be functionally more complex; 2) Frequency: the unmarked category is more frequent than marked; 3) Dependence on the context: according to Givón (1995, 2001), the markedness does not only concern linguistic categories but also the communicative categories in which they occur. As a theoretical reference, we were based on authors such as Bybee (2010), Cardoso (2015), Givón (2001, 1999), among others. The data used were extracted from two lexicographic instruments: the first is a database constituted during Nhampoca’s research (2010) and the second one is the Changana-Portuguese Dictionary of Sitoe (1996). From these instruments, we selected 05 ideophones that have a corresponding verb in the language studied. The analysis showed that the markedness’s principle is relevant to study of Changana ideophones and assists to distinguish ideophones from verbs, since we find that ideophones are marked predicators and verbs unmarked predicators.
