This article is about the fictional production of Mia Couto, especially his short stories. It analyzes how the Mozambican author uses in his writings issues related to speech and language and links it to the theories of postcolonialism. For Mia Couto the process of colonization imposes on the colonized another way of speaking, which corresponds to another language. In Mia Couto´s fiction, the question of language is inserted in the context of postcolonialism, both related to the process of language reconstruction of Portuguese on the African continent, and to an ideological reflection of his fiction. Finally, in this article, we highlight the political dimension of Mia Couto’s writing, since the work with language, that is linked to the problematic of identities in the historical context of Mozambique.
