This article objective is to discuss vocabulary teaching and its relation to dictionary use and other learning techniques and strategies in Portuguese as a Non-Native Language (PNNL) class, guided by communicative methods. Thus, some theoretical aspects regarding the importance of dictionary use and vocabulary learning in foreign language learning are discussed, as well as a proposal for communicative task that contemplates both the use of dictionary and vocabulary learning in PNNL classroom. Finally, as there is no consensus among researchers on how dictionary use can affect foreign language student, it is considered that the use of the dictionary (monolingual or bilingual) in PNNL class is important, as long as the student is taught how to consult it and use it only as a tool for learning, in order to not become dependent, causing him to hinder his development in the target language, in this case, the Portuguese.
