The main goal of this paper is to discuss the teaching of two fronts of grammatical studies, namely that of “grammar standards” and that of linguistic/grammatical analysis. It takes into account the Brazilian context by considering language teaching both in basic education and in the training of Portuguese language teachers. We discuss some teaching programs where these two fronts appear in basic education by taking as a starting point the official guidelines of the National Curricular Parameters and the Common Core Curriculum. The analysis of those guidelines will be complemented by some reflections on a textbook recommended by the National Textbook Program. In order to discuss the teaching of those two fronts in higher education, some pedagogical projects of undergraduate courses in Modern Languages (Portuguese), offered by Brazilian universities, are consulted. We argue in favor of the teaching of these two fronts in both basic education and in programs of Modern Languages (Portuguese) teacher’s training.
