The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated complex social changes taking place in society for decades. Policies and practices implemented to contain the pandemic and restrict the spread of the vírus - from physical/social isolation to lockdowns - have posed significant obstacles to the organization of public protests. To confront this new context, social movements and activists were forced to adapt and evolve quickly to ensure their survival and relevance, and to fulfill their demands. Despite difficulties, this article argues that in the period of 2020 to 2022, many social movements both became stronger and achieved considerable advances by using a combination of mobilization tactics including leveraging technology to channel popular discontent through networks of solidarity and political opportunities. Analyzing the contexts and experiences from around the world provides valuable lessons on how movements can dialogue and support each other and develop more durable sustainable forms of contestation processes.
