Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a rheumatic disease that usually affects the elderly. It is an indication for long-term steroid therapy. The etiology is unknown. The diagnosis is clinical and one of exclusion. It should be considered in patients over age 50 with bilateral pain and stiffness in the pelvic or shoulder girdles. In most cases, PMR can be treated by the general practitioner. We present a case of a 69 year-old woman in which there were diagnostic and management problems.
