Objectives: Despite being a symptom of unknown prevalence, halitosis is a very frequent reason for encounter in general practice. The objective of this review was to create a proposed clinical practice protocol for the management of halitosis in Primary Health Care. Data sources: We conducted research the PubMed/MEDLINE database. Discussion: We conducted a review of the theme divided in the following subheadings: epidemiology; classification; etiology; physiopathology; diagnosis; and management. Conclusions: Halitosis is multifaceted complaint, and its management must be multifactorial. A simple clinical practice protocol for primary health care can guide the thorough evaluation of this condition through an evidence-based anamnesis, a detailed physical examination, and an appropriate referral to secondary care.
