Abstract

LUCENA, Sónia. Adequate Food and Social Sustainability. Nutrícias [online]. 2012, n.15, pp.36-39. ISSN 2182-7230.

Sustainable development is an essential condition for strengthening democracy and citizenship through the participation of individuals in the development process based on ethics, justice and the satisfaction of human needs, such as food, health, education, housing, security, etc. Food intake constitutes one of the foundations of social sustainability, as it ensures the integral, harmonious functioning of the human organism from the physical, psychical, mental and social standpoints. Societies result from the interaction of individuals with their physical, psychical and social environment. The balance and development of a society is closely related to these parameters. Therefore, adequate food intake is an important aspect in the broader context of social sustainability.

Keywords : Food; Social sustainability; Quality of life; Food security.
