Abstract

XARA, Sónia; DIAS, Isabel  and  NEVES, Sofia. Nutritional Approach in Patient with Chylothorax. Nutrícias [online]. 2013, n.19, pp.32-34. ISSN 2182-7230.

Chylothorax is an accumulation of lymph in the pleural space. Given the high risk of undernutrition, correlated to the hemodynamic and metabolic complications of Chylothorax, the nutritional therapy should be started as soon as possible. Among the possible nutritional interventions are a low fat oral diet or the institution of artificial nutrition. Regardless the type of nutritional support, is essential a regular monitoring of the nutritional status, through the patient’s anthropometric parameters and analytical analysis for screening and prevention of deficiencies. Considering that there are no evidence-based guidelines for the nutritional management of chylothorax, the best therapeutic option should be implemented in accordance with patient’s individual and clinical characteristics.

Keywords : Chylothorax; Management; Nutritional therapy.
