PERREN, Joaquín. The Phenomenon of Residential Segregation in the “South of the South”: The Case of Neuquén (Patagonia, Argentina) in the Early 1990s. Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais [online]. 2014, n.105, pp.19-42. ISSN 2182-7435.  https://doi.org/10.4000/rccs.5776.

This article analyzes socio-economic residential segregation in the city of Neuquén (Patagonia, Argentina) at the beginning of the 1990s and is divided into three parts. The first section explores a theoretical-methodological approach to the concept of residential segregation and surveys the possible means of measuring this. The second section provides a general description of the scenario in which this phenomenon developed. It examines the growth strategy implemented by the Provincial Government and the changes which this has brought to the Neuquén population and society. The final part of the text presents a quantitative analysis of three dimensions of segregation: inequality, concentration and isolation. In heuristic terms, the article uses socio-demographic information taken from the 1991 Argentina National Population and Housing Census. In addition, to provide a spatial perspective for many of the phenomena which the Census data brings to light, thematic maps have been produced using Geographic Information Systems.

Palavras-chave : access to housing; Neuquén - Patagonia (Argentina); regional history; social segregation; urban space.
