Abstract

SILVA, Teresa Cruz e. Memory, History and Narrative: The Challenges of Biographical Writing in the Context of the Nationalist Struggle in Mozambique. Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais [online]. 2015, n.106, pp.133-152. ISSN 2182-7435.  https://doi.org/10.4000/rccs.5916.

Taking as a starting point the interrelationship between history, memory and narrative, this text discusses methodological questions and issues relating to the use of biographical narrative in historiography. These reflections are based upon various a posteriori readings of the life trajectories of Zedequias Manganhela and Eduardo Mondlane. The aim is to situate the configuration and reconfiguration of discourses in the context of the “recovery” of a national history which also involves the construction of figures of national heroes. All of this is situated within the contexts of both an official history of Mozambique and the institutional history of the Mozambique Presbyterian Church/ Swiss Mission, to which the two protagonists were closely connected, thus challenging us to confront the traps of biographical writing.

Keywords : biographical narrative; Eduardo Mondlane (1920-1969); history; identity; Mozambique; Zedequias Manganhela (1912-1972).
