Abstract

MELLO, Alex Fiúza de. The Dilemmas and Challenges of Amazon's Sustainable Development: The Example of Brazil. Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais [online]. 2015, n.107, pp.91-108. ISSN 2182-7435.  https://doi.org/DOI:10.4000/rccs.6025.

After more than 500 years of history, the end result of the Brazilian Amazon's endogenous models of economic exploitation is a predominant scenario of poverty and inequality. In short: it is progress without development. The challenge of reversing this situation, traditionally marked by a purely extractive model of exploitation of natural resources, requires, on the one hand, a political renegotiation of the Brazilian federal pact and, on the other, the emergence of a green knowledge-based economy underpinned by the intensive use of the appropriate science and technology, with the vertical integration of the main production chains (and the value they generate) associated with the strategic natural assets available in the region.

Keywords : Brazilian Amazon; green economy; poverty and inequality; sustainable development; technology and innovation.
