Abstract

WALTENBERG, Lucas. New Forms of the Music Album in Digital Culture: The Case of the “Biophilia” App. Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais [online]. 2016, n.109, pp.185-202. ISSN 2182-7435.  https://doi.org/10.4000/rccs.6276.

This article addresses changes in the phonographic industry, focusing on the “music album” format. Adopting a perspective that considers the importance of the materiality of music playback devices, it analyses the “Biophilia” app album launched by Björk in 2011, guided by questions concerning the materiality of music and the remediation of the music album through new protocols for listening. It argues that the album format - supposedly threatened by new music consumption practices involving digital technologies - suggests that it can be remodelled to follow the changing music industry, encouraging consumers and artists to respond to music in new ways.

Keywords : app album; Biophilia; Björk; electronic music; music album; phonographic industry.
