Abstract

RODRIGUES, Inês Nascimento. Decolonizing Phantasmagoria: Reflections on the “Massacre of 1953” in São Tomé and Príncipe. Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais [online]. 2018, n.115, pp.29-50. ISSN 2182-7435.  https://doi.org/10.4000/rccs.6954.

Assuming the irreplaceable role of specters in questioning the past, in particular with respect to those moments which constitute potentially traumatic ruptures, in this article I propose to test the value of a concept with markedly western origins – the haunting – in the construction of postcolonial policies and practices of memory. I intend, therefore, to demonstrate the sociological, political and literary possibilities of the ghost figure when applied to an event with historical and cultural specificities, namely the “Massacre of 1953” in São Tomé and Príncipe.

Keywords : Massacre of 1953; memory; fantasmagoria; postcolonialism; psychological trauma; São Tomé and Príncipe.
