Abstract

CASTRO, Helena  and  BRANDAO, Tiago. A Historical Perspective on the Profession of Researcher in Portugal - A Case Study. Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais [online]. 2022, n.127, pp.69-92.  Epub May 30, 2022. ISSN 2182-7435.  https://doi.org/10.4000/rccs.12843.

This article deals with how the profession of an academic researcher is viewed from a historical standpoint. Its narrative takes up the history of the legal professional status of academic researchers in Portugal, a status that depends greatly on Research and Development (R&D) funding flow. This historical perspective depicts how the legacy of the scientific system was built on unique circumstances, in many instances linked to a conservative institutional framework rooted in Portuguese universities and state laboratories. This has contributed to creating a gap that keeps researchers away from civil society and the private sector, causing losses for all parties and for the country as a whole.

Keywords : Portugal; science policy; scientific research career; scientific system history.
