Abstract

TELES, Nuno. Pandemic, Economic Crisis and the State’s New Role. Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais [online]. 2022, n.128, pp.15-38.  Epub Sep 30, 2022. ISSN 2182-7435.  https://doi.org/10.4000/rccs.13429.

This article offers a political economy analysis of the pandemic and its socioeconomic implications. It aims to identify the causes of the pandemic in the current structure of the international economy, defined by its liberalized and financialized outlook and growing monopolist multinational corporations. It is from this standpoint that some of the mechanisms behind the present crisis are pinpointed. The scale and scope of the States intervention to fight the economic crisis is scrutinized, whilst pointing to the unequal capabilities between center and peripheral countries. Through a tentative inquiry of the crisis’ consequences, it is argued that neoliberalism has not ended, albeit new signs may aid in its eventual routing.

Keywords : multinationals; neoliberalism; pandemic; political economy; State.
