Abstract

BACHETI, Luciane; LOUREIRO, Armando  and  CRISTOVAO, Artur. Education of Young People and Adults and Communitarian Rural Development: A Study in Brazilian Quilombola Territory. Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais [online]. 2023, n.132, pp.121-144.  Epub Dec 31, 2023. ISSN 2182-7435.  https://doi.org/10.4000/rccs.15171.

The study’s main objective was to better understand how to articulate youth and adult education and rural community development processes in a Brazilian quilombola community. The research was centred on action-research, involving endogenous leaders and external agents in the production of an overview of the territory and the implementation of an educational activity materialised in the mini-course “Elaboration of a Community-Based Ethnic Tourist Route”. The inhibiting factors were the infrastructure and logistics, the schedules found to be incompatible with community routines, the lack of political interest, and endogenous conflicts. However, education with quilombola youth and adults succeeded in providing readings of the community context, creating favourable times/spaces for dialogue, and unveiling strengths that enable them to achieve rural community development through community participation.

Keywords : education access; Brazil; quilombola communities; rural communities; rural development.
