Abstract

FARIA, Diogo. Unwanted judges? The protests against juízes de fora in medieval Portugal (1352-1521). Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal [online]. 2014, vol.ser2, n.2, pp.19-37. ISSN 2183-3176.

The creation of the office of juiz de fora (“judges from outside”), in the reign of King Afonso IV (r. 1325-1357), was not well received by the representatives of municipalities. In this paper, we analyze the evolution of the protests against these officers between the governments of King Afonso IV and King Manuel I (r. 1495-1521). At first, we focus on the study of the general chapters of Cortes who had this position as an object. Then we look at how three municipalities with different profiles (Lisbon, Porto and Tavira) dealt with the appointment of juízes de fora.

Keywords : Peripheral administration; Justice; Juiz de fora.
