Resumen

ALBERTO, Edite Martins. Algerian corsairs in Lisbon by the 18th century: an imminent danger. Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal [online]. 2015, vol.ser2, n.3, pp.127-147. ISSN 2183-3176.

Two days after Lisbon´s Earthquake (1755), the secretary of state Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo orders marquês estribeiro-mor to place military surveillance along Lisbon’s harbour to prevent potential attacks by Algerian corsairs. Who were these privateers and what were they looking for? Why were they in Tagus river? These are questions that we will discuss in this paper. We will try also to understand why were our rullers so attentive to an eventual corsair activity while the city was struggling against the devastating effects of the earthquake.

Palabras clave : Lisbon; Harbour defense; Privateers and piracy; Algerian corsairs; Captives.
