This paper focuses on textile decorations (armações) used to celebrate religious events in churches in Lisbon, during the 17^th and 18^th centuries. Several studies have looked at the ceremonies, but very little attention has been given to the professionals who were responsible for the conception and execution of the ornamental programs. Through a careful analysis of the content of contemporary municipal regulations, it is possible to clarify the modus operandi of these decorators of the church and the scope and impact of their work.
