Abstract

LOURENCO, Tiago Borges. Rua Nova da Palma: Four centuries in the lifespan of a street (1554-1959). Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal [online]. 2018, vol.ser2, n.9, pp.15-41. ISSN 2183-3176.

Built in 1554/5, from the start Rua Nova da Palma became one of the main exit routes of Lisbon, allowing a direct access from the Rossio area to the north, towards Estrada de Sacavém. Confirming its paramount importance, between the 18th century and the end of the 20th century were multiplied plans for widening, extension and replacement of the street to answer to the increasing circulation of people. Ironically, due to its development and subsequent use as starting point of the axis formed by Avenida Almirante Reis, the street became almost invisible in the imagination of the younger generations of lisboetas. Therefore, I intend to address how the beginning and development of plans for Rua da Palma shaped and changed radically its meaning and history.

Keywords : Rua Nova da Palma; Lisbon; Urbanism; Mouraria.
