MATOS, Álvaro Costa de. The official Gazeta de Lisboa newspaper and the Liberal Revolution of August 24th, 1820: historical essay. Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal [online]. 2021, vol.ser2, n.15, pp.175-192. Epub 01-Jun-2021. ISSN 2183-3176.
After theorizing the problem, outlining the historical framework of our object of study (Gazeta de Lisboa) and its characterization in the periodical culture of seven-hundred and eight-hundred years, this essay aims to understand how the first official Portuguese newspaper acknowledged and published the military pronouncement of Oporto on August 24th, 1820 among the “public opinion”. Somehow, being the official journal of the Old Regime, how did Gazeta de Lisboa report its end? What discursive strategy was used before and after the Liberal Revolution? What ensued when Lisbon joined the revolutionary movement of the “wicked”? What influence did Gazeta de Lisboa have on Portuguese society? The answer to these questions allows us to understand how journalistic mediation was carried out in the early nineteenth century, as well as the role periodicals played in creating a media space and in founding a critical public opinion, although basically circumscribed to the “well-educated public”.
