Abstract

GONCALVES, Joaquim Pombo. Lusitânia Ceramics Factory: innovative construction products. Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal [online]. 2022, vol.ser2, n.17, pp.73-86.  Epub June 01, 2022. ISSN 2183-3176.  https://doi.org/10.48751/cam-7xt9-mr94.

The existence of the Fábrica de Cerâmica Lusitânia is intrinsically associated with the development of national civil construction. Its business dynamics, based on technological development, allowed the production of innovative but essential materials for civil construction, a fundamental fact for the projects planned for the expansion of the city of Lisbon in the first half of the 20th century. Also in the area of tiles, Fábrica de Cerâmica Lusitânia played an important role through the development of projects in different places in Portugal, the introduction of innovative methods and the hiring of one of the main national artists: Jorge Colaço. It is a journey of technical innovation in facilities and infrastructures, social support for its employees, national expansion, but fundamentally, adaptation to the “new times” (even in the decision to relocate to the Arco do Cego, Campo Pequeno) fitting technologically in the developments of the productive methods that appeared in Europe.
