Abstract

SUBTIL, José. The Congress and the insupermountable political discord between Portuguese and Brazilian Deputies (1820-1823). Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal [online]. 2023, vol.ser2, n.19, e202301.  Epub Mar 30, 2023. ISSN 2183-3176.  https://doi.org/10.48751/cam-2022-19132.

The present text aims to emphasize the political unavailability of the majority of Portuguese deputies and some Brazilians to solve the problem of the union between Portugal and Brazil, in view of the passage of the “United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves” (1815), a creation of absolute monarchy, for a model that could reflect the constitutional and liberal political culture. The fact that they did not find a solution served, in Brazil, for the feelings of autonomy and, in Portugal, for the centralizing drive of the Portuguese deputies. The delay in the arrival of Brazilian deputies, the lack of a good reception and political integration, the constant criticism of their interventions on Brazil’s constitutional rights and the delay in information and news, ended up closing the dialogue and feeding the independence movement.

Keywords : Brazil; Independence; Constituent Courts; Liberalism.
