SOUSA, Jorge Pedro; LOPES, Fátima Cardoso  e  LIMA, Helena. Sidonism’s photographic news: a reading of Portuguese Illustration (1917-1918) based on Nelson Traquina’s proposal on news values. Media & Jornalismo [online]. 2020, vol.20, n.37, pp.59-96. ISSN 1645-5681.  https://doi.org/10.14195/2183-5462_37_4.

Sidónio Pais’ regime implemented a public performance of power centered on the chief. At the time, photojournalism was already a consolidated practice in Ilustração Portuguesa, the only news illustrated magazine that then circulated in Portugal. How has the photographic discourse chronologically reflected the march of time and the choreography of power orchestrated by Sidonism, and how has this intertwined or affected the principles of newsworthiness and news values criteria? This research seeks to answer the starting question, throughout a qualitative discourse analysis of photographic manifestations of Sidonism in that magazine. We conclude that the photographic discourse of Ilustração Portuguesa fed the myth of Sidónio Pais, affecting the imaginary and historical memory and that the criteria of newsworthiness were affected to accommodate news media discourse to the political situation. The notoriety of the character overlapped any other news values.

Palavras-chave : Sidónio Pais; photography; photojournalism; Ilustração Portuguesa; newsworthiness.
