Abstract

CORREIA, Ariana Pinto  and  NEVES, Sofia. Media narratives about intimate partner femicide in Portugal. Media & Jornalismo [online]. 2021, vol.21, n.39, pp.229-245.  Epub Dec 31, 2021. ISSN 1645-5681.  https://doi.org/10.14195/2183-5462_39_12.

This investigation paper intends to characterize intimate partner femicide in Portugal, in the attempted and consummated form, starting from media narratives analysis published in Portuguese newspapers Correio da Manhã and Público, between years 2000 and 2017. The analysis corpus, consisting of 853 news, corresponds to 644 intimate partner femicide cases. Departing from a triangulated data analysis, meaning that quantitative and qualitative analysis had been made, a clear distinction from both newspapers has emerged in its form and content, accentuated in the past decade. Therefore, while Correio da Manhã tends to narrate the crimes as passionate and unpredictable, associated with jealousy and the non-acceptance of the separation, appealing to parallel narratives that exonerates the perpetrator, Público tends to present the crime in a contextualized way. This mediatic polarization, besides disconnected from Istambul Convention guidelines (2011), contributes to a skewed social construction of intimate partner femicide, with effects not only in public opinion, but in intimate partner violence victims and offenders.

Keywords : femicide; intimacy; Portugal; press.
