Abstract

MENDES, André  and  SILVA, Terezinha. Populism in Brazil: the strategies used by Bolsonaro to reach the power. Media & Jornalismo [online]. 2022, vol.22, n.40, pp.79-104.  Epub June 30, 2022. ISSN 1645-5681.  https://doi.org/10.14195/2183-5462_40_4.

This article intends to analyse the political trajectory of right-wing populist Jair Bolsonaro towards the presidency of Brazil with the intention of questioning the consensus disseminated by the media (and by several academic works) that the former captain is an irascible political actor and incapable of planning. Our hypothesis is that he used well-planned strategies to reach the presidency of Brazil in 2018. To carry out these analyses and reflections, we used the notion of Truth and Discourse by Foucault and Politics by Laclau and Mouffe, as well as the concepts of Public Image developed by Wilson Gomes, and Enquadramento, based on the approach of Erving Goffman. After analysing and reflecting on the selected events, the hypothesis that Bolsonaro’s actions are not random and irrational proved to be pertinent.

Keywords : populism; policy; Brazil; Jair Bolsonaro.
