Abstract

ARAUJO, Bruno  and  CAMPOS, Fernanda Safira Soares. Authoritarian Populism and the Environment in Brazil: Framings of Jair Bolsonaro’s anti-environmental discourse in national and international editorials. Media & Jornalismo [online]. 2022, vol.22, n.40, pp.141-159.  Epub June 30, 2022. ISSN 1645-5681.  https://doi.org/10.14195/2183-5462_40_7.

The study analyses the framings of Brazilian and international reference media outlets on Jair Bolsonaro’s environmental policy. It starts from a discussion about the relation of authoritarian populism with the environmental agenda, followed by a reflection about the political function of editorials. At the empirical level, we resort to the framing analysis, combined with lexical analysis, for the study of a corpus of 50 editorials. The results show the mobilisation of categories of populism-authoritarianism in the media interpretation of Bolsonaro, although there are differences in the way those categories are mobilised in the editorial coverage of Brazilian and foreign media outlets.

Keywords : populism; environment; Bolsonaro; editorials.
