Resumen

LIMA, João; RODRIGUES, Jéssica; CANHOLA, José  y  ROCHA, Ada. Food habits and anthropometric profile of young juvenile rowers. Acta Port Nutr [online]. 2017, n.11, pp.16-20. ISSN 2183-5985.  https://doi.org/10.21011/apn.2017.1103.

Several studies have shown a positive correlation between competitive success and anthropometric profile of rowers. This study aimed to evaluate the eating habits and anthropometric profile of juvenile oar rowing athletes. 163 athletes were evaluated most of them from the male gender and were aged between 15 and 16 years old. The dietary habits were evaluated through application of an indirect questionnaire developed for this purpose and the anthropometric measures were collected: weight, height, sitting height, wingspan and skinfolds. Most athletes showed normal weight and a higher percentage of fat was observed in female athletes (p <0.001) and in older athletes (p <0.001). Approximately 67% of the athletes reported to have 5 or more meals a day and those who routinely eat breakfast (p = 0.001), mid-morning (p = 0.026) and supper (p = 0.005) presented lower fat mass than the others. Only 23.3% of athletes eat fresh fruit more than twice a day, 27.0% soup and 33.1% vegetables respectively. Approximately 10% of athletes do not consume any food or drink before training and more than 10% reported to consume food supplements. There was an association between daily water intake and a better sports result (p = 0.029).

Palabras clave : Anthropometric evaluation; Food habits; Rowers.
