Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death in Portugal. Various studies point the Mediterranean diet as the protector of the cardiovascular diseases. Objectives: Evaluate the adherence to the Mediterranean diet and characterize the nutritional state of a sample of patients hospitalized at Hospital Espírito Santo de Évora, E.P.E. who suffered acute myocardial infarction. Methodology: Transversal study. Sample from 42 patients with myocardial infarction admitted at Hospital Espírito Santo de Évora, E.P.E., between February and April of 2018. Data on education, weight, height and the waist circumference were collected. Regarding the adherence to the Mediterranean diet MedDietScore was applied. To characterize the food pattern the alimentation frequency quiz was applied. Results: The average age of men and women was 65,3 years old±10,2 and 70,5 years old±11,3, respectively. The body mass index of the sample had an average of 28,5 Kg/m2±4,6 (29,6 Kg/m2±5,4 in women and 28,03 Kg/m2±4,3 in men). From the 25 elderly, 64% were overweight and from the 17 adults, 76,5% were overweight as well. The waist circumference median on men was of 100,0 cm and on women was of 102,0 cm. A waist circumference >88 cm was found in 100% of women. In 44.8% of men was found a waist circumference >102 cm and in 24.1% was found a waist circumference >94 cm. Only 19.1% of those who were surveyed presented a high adherence to Mediterranean diet. The consumption of red meat was higher than the consumption of white meat or fish [64,3 (P25=17,13; P75=77,15) g/day vs. 31,7(P25=12,0; P75=68,6) g/day e 14,3(P25=6,9;P75=31,4) g/day]. Conclusions: The majority of the sample participants were overweight (69,0%), had a waist circumference indicative of cardiovascular diseases, and 80,9% did not present a high adherence to the Mediterranean diet.
