Abstract

CASADO, Sara; FARIA, Ana  and  LOUREIRO, Helena. ATHELETE NUTRITION AND IMMUNITY. Acta Port Nutr [online]. 2021, n.26, pp.74-78.  Epub Dec 28, 2021. ISSN 2183-5985.  https://doi.org/10.21011/apn.2021.2611.

Nutrition has the ability to contribute for good performance in athletes, and it is in this aspect that nutritional supplements require special consideration as a nutritional strategy. Exercise represents a major challenge to global body homeostasis, with immediate and adaptive responses at the cellular and systemic level. Thus, nutrients play an important role in regulating processes ranging from energy production to the creation of new cells and proteins. Nutrient availability contributes to marked differences in functions such as immune system support and the reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation, and in some cases can enhance sports performance.

The objective of this article is to perform a systematic review on the impact of nutrition on athlete's immunity.

Evidence suggests that the athlete's diet is a modulator of his immunity, however the mechanisms of action are not well defined in the literature.
