JOAO, Dina Raquel; MATEUS, Maria Palma  e  BRAZ, Nídia. INFLUENCE OF ADHERENCE TO THE MEDITERRANEAN DIETARY PATTERN IN HEALTH THROUGHOUT THE LIFE CYCLE. Acta Port Nutr [online]. 2022, n.28, pp.42-47.  Epub 01-Jul-2022. ISSN 2183-5985.  https://doi.org/10.21011/apn.2022.2808.

Food and nutrition exert pre-conception and gestational influences and constitute determining factors for achieving nutritional needs in the life cycle, which are essential for development, growth, and for a healthy life. Scientific evidence has demonstrated the protective role of the Mediterranean Food Pattern, both during these crucial periods of the life cycle, but also against various pathologies that can develop later in adult life. With this work we intend to present an updated review about the influence of this dietary pattern on health throughout the life cycle. For this purpose, a search was carried out, in MEDLINE, of scientific articles in Portuguese or English, with free access, published between 2000 and 2022, selected according to their relevance and relevance to the topic. Research was completed using websites from national and international entities. A total of 78 references were included. It is concluded that the Mediterranean Food Pattern, in addition to the positive impact on fertility, on the development and success of pregnancy, on the health of the offspring, on the development and growth of children and adolescents and on the nutritional status of subjects at all stages of life cycle, seems to have a role in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular, metabolic, endocrine and neurodegenerative diseases.
