Abstract

COSTA, Liliane. NUTRITIONAL INTERVENTION: THE ROLE OF EVALUATION. Acta Port Nutr [online]. 2022, n.30, pp.72-76.  Epub Mar 06, 2023. ISSN 2183-5985.  https://doi.org/10.21011/apn.2022.3013.

The evaluation of health interventions is a powerful instrument for continuous quality improvement and can be understood as the systematic investigation of the elements of an intervention, to produce information that allows the determination of its value or merit by all interested parts. The evaluation process should be an integral part of the design and planning of any intervention in Public Health Nutrition. The evaluation has different approaches, depending on the object of the assessment, the objectives and the level of care/organizational. The evaluation can take place before, during or after the implementation of the intervention, it can have a formative or summative function, it can use qualitative or quantitative methods, and, as a value judgment, it can be normative or evaluative. The design and planning of the evaluation may use logical models that allow the intervention to be visually structured, in order to facilitate the operationalization of both. Evaluation should therefore be a tool commonly used by nutritionists in order to promote the evidence-based practice of Public Health Nutrition and promote continuous improvement in health quality.
