Abstract

FIGUEIRA, Sónia M. M.  and  GAMEIRO, Manuel Gomes. Significant relational experiences associated with caring of adolescents with oncological disease in the post-diagnosis. Revista Onconews [online]. 2021, n.43, pp.6-14.  Epub Dec 01, 2021. ISSN 1646-7868.  https://doi.org/10.31877/on.2021.43.01.

Significant care relational experiences arise in the interaction of adolescents with the different people they interact with ending up mediating their own experience of the oncological disease. Thus, the study aimed to: Understand the significant relational experiences of adolescents with hemato-oncological disease, associated with caring, in the diagnostic phase. An empirical investigation of qualitative type, with an interpretative phenomenological nature (Giorgi's procedural method). Nine Portuguese adolescents undergoing cancer treatment were interviewed.

From the essential structure of the experiences, obtained in an inductive way, there are 4 experiential dimensions: Relating to hospital staff; Maintaining relationship with friends; Valuing family support; and Valuing relationships with other people.

In the nurse-adolescent care relationships, this values: proximity, nurses' involvement in the care provided, support, good mood; availability to dialogue; and encouragement to face and overcome the disease.

Nurses should encourage adolescents to share emotions and expectations, with a view to progressively and proactively integrate the disease, without neglecting individual specificities in their experiences.
