COSTA, D. USE OF ANCESTRAL LIFESTYLE CONCEPTS IN THE 21ST CENTURY: OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSING CONTRIBUTION. RPSO [online]. 2019, vol.8, pp.16-26.  Epub 12-Jul-2021. ISSN 2183-8453.  https://doi.org/10.31252/rpso.14.09.2019.

Introduction:

Darwin's evolutionary theories have revolutionized the way Biology studies and interprets the environment surrounding human beings. However, this approach does not seem to have been carried over to medicine and nursing in the same way as in biology. Despite the radical lifestyle changes to which humans have been exposed, genetics do not seem to have changed in the same proportion, resulting in an epidemic of civilization's chronic diseases. Following a multimodal approach model inspired by the ancestral lifestyle, the Occupational Health Nurse, who is at the forefront of adult health promotion, may allow improvements in metabolic and anthropometric markers in corporate workers, which, indirectly, will enhance the quality of life, work productivity and labor accidents.

Methods:

We present the data obtained through the study of seven workers who were being followed by the Healthy Lifestyle Nursing Consultation, in a company located in northern Portugal, to whom a multimodal approach was applied: personalized health education sessions based on ancestral human evolution lifestyle concepts.

Results:

Seven cases of improvement of metabolic/ anthropometric markers in workers followed at the Nursing Consultation for Healthy Lifestyles are demonstrated: triglycerides, triglycerides: HDL ratio, weight, Body Mass Index, waist circumference and blood pressure.

Conclusions:

Inspiration for ancestral lifestyles is perfectly achievable in the 21st century and leads to improvements in metabolic and physiological markers of workers. The reality about the incidence and prevalence of chronic degenerative diseases seems to be fundamentally due to changes in the modern lifestyle. Therefore, its prevention (or reversal) should focus mainly on behavioral changes, and if we achieve benefits in Case Management, we can gradually improve companies.
