Introduction:

Occupational exposures to sharp material, potentially contaminated by infectious agents, can transmit various types of pathogens and cause illnesses. These events imply the need to investigate the factors that predisposes the occurrence and the forms of intervention.

Objective:

The study aimed to develop an intervention plan to contribute to the notification, prevention and monitoring system improvement for cases of sharps accidents focusing on resident doctors working in the operating room from the José Alencar Gomes da Silva National Cancer Institute.

Methodology:

To elaborate the action plan it was proposed as the main measure the analysis of the process and working conditions with health teams in the operating room, the place with the highest occurrence of accidents, aiming to identify the factors and situations that favor these injuries. A mixed method was used which included meetings with managers of the Institute; accidents at work with biological material institutional protocol review; visits to the operating room; discussion with a work team and meeting with resident doctors and staff.

Results and conclusion:

These actions provided an overview of the problem surrounding these accidents, brought together relevant elements that were discussed with the medical team and favored the preparation of proposals for the Intervention Plan.
