Abstract

GENTIL-HOMEM, Pedro. “Brace... brace...brace…”: Safety cards, a design history overview for (another) visual culture. Revista Convergências [online]. 2020, vol.13, n.26, pp.31-40.  Epub Nov 30, 2020. ISSN 2184-0180.  https://doi.org/10.53681/c1514225187514391s.26.16.

Safety instructions mandatorily present inside the seat pockets of all commercial aircraft, due to their graphics, assumed an iconic status associated with air travel. The illustrations, instructive and accurate, built a visual discourse that hypothetically reached far beyond mere aeronautical culture, taking its place among Design Culture and Popular Culture. Based upon our research for a PhD thesis, in which we visited these (and others) very specific areas of Design for the national airline TAP Air Portugal, we now extend and integrate them into a broader and transversal phenomenon.

Keywords : History; Design Criticism; Design Culture; TAP Air Portugal.
