Abstract
CARVALHO, João Victor Brito dos Santos and KANAMARU, Antonio Takao. Klara Hartoch, Anni Albers and indigenous references in modern textile design. Revista Convergências [online]. 2023, vol.16, n.31, pp.119-128. Epub May 31, 2023. ISSN 2184-0180. https://doi.org/10.53681/c1514225187514391s.31.141.
This article aims to contribute to the comprehension of the use of indigenous latin-american references in 20th century modern textile design, questioned in the context of an approach that is critical of coloniality. Here, specifically, these references are observed in the works of two textile designers whose productions have been, to some extent, in dialogue with indigenous cultures: Klara Hartoch and Anni Albers. Firstly, the article introduces both designers and their respective trajectories and, secondly, it tries to stablish a systematic comparison between some of their pieces, thinking of four categories: references, materials, methods/processes, and achieved results. Finally, the article discusses how the analyzed works contribute to the construction of a colonialist imaginary regarding indigenous cultures that unfolds within 20th century modern design.
