Abstract

RODRIGUES, Maria João; PEIXOTO, Tânia Isabel; PEREIRA, Vanessa Cristiana  and  LEITE, Ângela. Virtual reality and hostility: Can virtual reality reduce hostility?. PsychTech [online]. 2020, vol.4, n.1, pp.32-48.  Epub Sep 29, 2021. ISSN 2184-1004.  https://doi.org/10.26580/pthj.art27-2020.

The present systematic review of the literature aims to understand the relationship between virtual reality and hostility, assessing the possibility that VR can reduce hostility. The literature to be analyzed were retrieved from B-On and Google Scholar databases. The key-words used were:“virtual reality” or “VR” or “videogames”, “hostility”, “aggression”, “aggressive behavior” or “hostility reduction”, “virtual reality AND aggression” and “virtual reality AND hostility” were used taking into account the defined inclusion criteria, being the date of the publication after 2015. From 27,001 articles, 20 were selected. The results point mostly to an association between virtual reality and hostility, although some contradict this general trend. Using virtual reality produces different effects, with some proving to be effective and others without permanent individual behavior changes. It is recommended to use this tool to complement other interventions to reduce hostility. The conclusion is that the combination of VR with complementary therapies appears to have promising effects in reducing hostility.

Keywords : aggression; hostility; videogames; virtual reality.
