This study aims to analyze the prevalence of the main geriatric syndromes among elderly individuals assisted by Family Health Strategy teams, exploring the association with female gender. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a random and representative sample of elderly individuals registered and followed by ESF teams. The sample consisted of 1750 elderly individuals, of whom 63.5% were female and 48.6% were between 60 and 69 years old. The Brazilian Older Americans Resources and Services Multi-Dimensional Function Assessment Questionnaire (BOMFAQ) and the Clinical-Functional Vulnerability Index (IVCF-20) were used. Pearson’s chi-square test was used to compare prevalence between men and women. The magnitude of associations between female gender and geriatric syndromes was estimated using Odds Ratios. Elderly women had significantly higher odds of immobility (OR = 1.63), cognitive impairment (OR = 1.44), postural instability (OR = 1.56), urinary incontinence (OR = 1.40), and iatrogenesis (OR = 1.69) compared to elderly men. In conclusion, a high prevalence of the main geriatric syndromes was observed in the evaluated group, with a higher incidence among females, indicating a more significant morbidity burden for elderly women.
