Abstract

PINTO, Patrícia; LEAL, Rita MF; COSTA, Ilídia  and  TAVARES, Ana Rita. Man's sexual satisfaction in transition to parenthood. RIIS [online]. 2022, vol.5, n.1, pp.59-68.  Epub June 30, 2022. ISSN 2184-1578.  https://doi.org/10.37914/riis.v5i1.168.

Background:

the birth of a child brings changes to the couple's life which includes their sexuality, in which the man´s perspective is rarely explored.

Objectives:

to describe men's sexual satisfaction after the birth of a child; verify the existence of a relationship between sexual satisfaction and personal and family characteristics.

Methodology:

descriptive-correlational, cross-sectional study with fathers of children aged >= 1 month e <= 1 year. The sampling was non-probabilistic (n=101), whose questionnaire was distributed online and integrated the New Sexual Satisfaction Scale validated for the Portuguese population by Pechorro et al. (2015).

Results:

the men's sexual satisfaction was positive, however, the lowest score was attributed to items related to their partner's availability, creativity and diversity for sexual intercourse. There was no statistically significant relationship between men's sexual satisfaction and their personal and family characteristics.

Conclusion:

the man has expectations in relation to his partner with regard to sexuality. Health professionals should value sexuality from the couple´s perspective, in the transition to parenthood. Investment in communication and equal sharing of domestic tasks between the couple is suggested, so that availability is reserved for sexuality.

Keywords : father; parents; parenthood; sexuality.
