Abstract

PIRES, Leonardo Aboim. The Farmers Guilds in Bragança district and the corporative functionalities in the rural communities. População e Sociedade [online]. 2019, n.32, pp.204-221.  Epub July 01, 2022. ISSN 0873-1861.

In this article we deal with the interrelationship between corporatism, local powers and economic structure in a specific Portuguese region - Bragança - during the Estado Novo. Here, we examine the farmers guilds to put in perspective their specific characteristics and institutional linkages but also the various tactics promoted tending to create spaces able to integrate landowners and rural workers. These remarks lead us to analyse the mechanisms used to avoid the obstacles created by social and economic circumstances. Additionally, this work sustains the idea that the agrarian organizational system created Portuguese corporate state was faltering and wasn’t a concerted and satisfactory solution for the economic interests, contrary to the objectives set by the doctrinal principles. In parallel, it shows the farmers guilds’ role in the administrative shaping process and the tense coexistence and disputes following the creation of these institutions.

Keywords : corporatism; rural society; Estado Novo; farmers guilds; Bragança.
