Introduction: The central theme of this research is the use and appreciation of student questions in the classroom. The relevance is given by the need to spread the theme, since it can contribute to the improvement of the teaching and learning processes. The study sought to answer the guiding question: How do teachers use and value students' questions in the classroom? Objective: The aim was to understand how teachers use and value questions in the classroom. Method: This is a qualitative approach research. The corpus of analysis is composed of parts of five semi-structured interviews conducted with five elementary school teachers from a public school located in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. The data were analyzed by means of Textual Discourse Analysis. Results: the analysis of the answers to the semi-structured interview, generated 390 units of meaning, from which eleven subcategories and three categories emerged as follows: (i) the use of questions to aid the learning process; (ii) the use of questions to aid the teaching process; and (iii) the use of questions to facilitate class development. Conclusions: teachers recognize the value of student questions for learning. However, they present limitations to teaching through questioning. These results highlight the importance of valuing students' questions in class. It is believed that such action, besides contributing to the improvement of teaching practice, can reduce the gap between school knowledge and the complex demands of today's society.
