Knowledge, attitudes and behaviour in relation to AIDS in an african migrant community: implications for intervention

Abstract: The AIDS and HIV infection rates in Portugal are growing in the past years. There is increasing recognition that migrants may be more vulnerable than local population to acquiring the infection. The purpose of this study was to explore AIDS related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours in a migrant community near Lisbon. The participants of this study were 66, aged 15 or older. Data was obtained from 8 group interviews, groups being selected by aged and sex. The results indicate a gender difference regarding AIDS related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours. The results highlight the impact of psychosocial and cultural factors in the individual and group behaviour. These findings are discussed in terms of the relevance to adopting preventive behaviours and the implications of research results in the design of culturally appropriate strategies to promote sexual health focused to these communities.

Key words: African community, AIDS prevention, Attitude and behaviour, Knowledge.
