10th-Grade course books (CTV/Portuguese B), the construction of knowledge and students autonomy. A survey of the subjects (students and teachers) mediated by an instrumental study case
This study deals with the issue of the making of school course books (Choppin, 1992; Richaudeau, 1986; Gérard & Roegiers, 1988; Valente et al., 1989) following a constructivist approach to knowledge (Ausubel, 1980), from a lifelong leaning perspective. Hummel (1988) has been the authors leading reference.
The qualitative methodology adopted consisted of semi-structured interviews to a group of key subjects (10th-grade students and teachers) from a secondary school in the suburbs of Lisbon and resulted in an instrumental case-study (Stake, 1988: 18). Four students were selected from a 10th- grade science course (1st year of the Secondary Education) and three teachers in a secondary school in the district of Almada. Then, by means of content analysis a deeper understanding was reached of the way students and teachers view their school textbooks (Port. B/CTV), both from an individual and a cooperative perspective.
The study conclusions stress those of Hummel (1988) reinforcing the notion that the school textbooks must be built on the basis of lifelong learning concepts. Thus, learners build their own knowledge and become the masters the options of their lives (World Report of Education, 1996; Lifelong Learning Memorandum, 2000). For they will act more autonomously as individuals in a lifelong learning process. With the support of school textbooks.
