The present investigation wants to reflect about the difficulty of identifying gifted children — the factors that difficult it, concerning the teachers of 2° and 3rd cycles, from schools of the district of Santarém. So with this study we intend to contribute to the discussion of the role of the teachers and schools in the Educative lntervention with gifted or talented children.

Nowadays there is a certain consensus with the idea that a systematised educational intervention is required to develop and stimulate the development of capacities and talents. All the children have the right to be educated according to their needs/necessities. The achievement of this right consists in the differentiation, in modifying the contents, the processes, the products and the contexts according to the needs of every child. Although little has been done so far to attend the educative demanding of more capable students, precisely because it is considered that their personal characteristics allow them to achieve a satisfactory personal development by themselves.

With the times some myths have been installed, wrong ideas and false concepts around giftedness. These convictions, very often, result from the ignorance of this subject, which difficult the creation of educative conditions adapted to the specific needs of these students. Nowadays these ideas and concepts are still a real obstacle to the development of studies, to the creation of associations, to the elaboration of new legislation and to the intervention and educative support to gifted children. Once teachers are responsible for most of the learning made by children, we think it is important to identify the wrong beliefs, stereotypes and myths that still predominate in this area, making a reflection about each of them and proposing educative measures aiming these children’s integration in the regular educative system.

The followed methodology is based on quantitative procedures, used after the filling in of questionnaires, which were given by teachers of the 2 and 3rd cycles teaching in some schools of the district of Santarém.

The results of this work show that the teachers value specially the cognitive factors and simultaneously the inadequate behaviour characteristics. So teachers consider that a gifted child is cognitively outstanding but often has an inadequate behaviour. Therefore, they will probably advise psychological support as the most appropriate measure for these children in order to promote the management of their behaviour.
